GOKHALE MEMORIAL GIRLS' SCHOOL

 

Sarala Ray, the founder of this institution, under the auspices of the Mahila Samiti in Calcutta founded Gokhale Memorial Girls' School. Today, the school stands as an embodiment of her constructive talents. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was a friend, philosopher and guide to Sarala Ray. He was a great advocate of women's education. As a memorial to Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Mrs. Ray named the school, Gokhale Memorial Girls' School.

Mrs. Ray with the help of the then director of public instruction, Mr. Hornell, secured a government owned land in the vicinity of Victoria Memorial to set up this school. Those who helped in this project included R.N. Mukherjee, S.P. Sinha (later Lord Sinha) and her own brother S.R. Das, a well- known advocate general, C.R. Das and S.N. Bose too extended their helping hands.

The school came into existence in a small building with a limited number of pupils that blossomed into higher secondary school with approximately 2000 students in a sprawling campus. The approximate admission fee is 70,000, approximate fee per month is 4000 for KG I to Class I, Classes II to VIII is 4500, Classes IX & X is 4700 and XI & XII varies from 4000 to 5550. However, if it is decided later on for any upward revision (increase) of fees structure from the next academic session relevant for the candidate, the balance amount due to increase have to be paid before the commencement of the of the new academic year (i.e. April'26).
