It opened in 1843, the school was set to house and nurture orphans and abandoned children. Originally the were small cottages to house the children and some destitute women. The present buildings were constructed with the help of kind benefactors in 1859-60 and between 1880 and 1916. Two classroom wings were added in 1965 and 1968 to accommodate the growing number of boarders.
